A message from Justice Joe Williams

Pōwhiri at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland – 4pm, Wednesday 30 January 2019

Conference at The University of Auckland, 31 January – 1 February 2019

attach a flyer for the conference to mark the retirement of the Chief Justice. This conference is planned as the major event for the profession and the judiciary to farewell our Chief Justice. The calibre of the speakers is simply outstanding.  They include the Chief Justice of Australia, Justice Rosie Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada, Jeremy Waldron, and Sir Anthony Mason.

The Conference to mark the retirement of the Chief Justice is on 31 January and 1 February 2019 and will take place at the University of Auckland.

It will be preceded, on the afternoon of 30 January 2019, with a pōwhiri at the University marae, Waipapa Marae, welcoming visitors and acknowledging the Chief Justice’s contribution to the law and to Te Ao Māori. The pōwhiri will be hosted by Ngāti Whātua and the University of Auckland Māori community, and joining them will be Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa (Māori Law Society) and the Māori judiciary.  The Chief Justice will be taken onto the marae by Ngāti Te Ata, of the Southern Manukau area, a tribe with whom she has had a close relationship since the earliest days in practice.

After the pōwhiri there will be a welcoming cocktail party at the Fale Pasifika.

The conference will begin the next morning.  For those visiting from out of town, there will be home hosting on the Thursday night — a mixture of international speakers, and out of towners, hosted by Auckland judges and practitioners at their homes.  The
Conference will end on Friday night with a dinner to farewell the Chief Justice, to be held at Auckland War Memorial Museum.

I encourage you to attend this conference.  It is a once in a professional life event, and an important opportunity to mark the contribution the Chief Justice has made to our judiciary, profession and society.

Justice Joe Williams
