Hui-ā-Tau 2024

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi & Whakatāne
Thursday 5th September to Sunday 8th September

Our 2024 Hui-ā-Tau programme honours our theme with over 10 hours of CPD including keynote presentations, breakout streams, tauira competitions and our Te Matature kapahaka evening. We cover a vast and diverse arrange of topics and practice areas.

The 2024 Conference Theme was gifted to us by Tā Hirini Moko Mead. It is an extract from a waiata tohutohu (song of advice) composed be Te Kooti Arikirangi in 1884 where he warned of encroaching authority and the loss of land:

“Ko te mana tuatahi ko te Tiriti o Waitangi
Ko te mana tuarua ko te Kooti Whenua
Ko te mana tuatoru ko te Mana Motuhake …
He kino anō rā ka āta kitea iho
Ngā mana Māori ka mahue kei muri!”

The first mana is the Treaty of Waitangi
The second mana is the Land Court
The third mana is the Separate Mana …
It would indeed be an evil thingTo abandon the mana of the Māori!

Ta Hirini encourages us to reflect on these various mana and their deep relevance today. However, he also offers his own additional warning. “Mana is great, but it needs aroha ki te tangata beside it.”
