Nominations for all the Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa awards are now open!
To nominate someone you think exemplifies the awards below, please click the title of the award below to send through a nomination containing the following information:

  • Nominee for the award,
  • Reason for nomination,
  • Your name and contact details.

All awards are open to any Māori with or studying towards a Law Degree or working within Legal Academia. Nominations must be received by email to before 5pm, Friday 9 August 2019.

John Te Manihera Chadwick Award

2018 marks the third year that the John Te Manihera Chadwick taonga is available to a young person in the field of Law who has displayed a significant contribution to their community.

The award also embodies the special relationship that exists between Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa and Ngā Kaiāwhina Hapori Māori o te Ture (Community Law).

Selection of the successful applicant is made jointly by Ngā Kāiawhina Hapori Māori o te Ture Executive Committee and Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa Executive Committee.

The Community Contribution Award

The Community Contribution Award may be awarded to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession or to the community beyond their “day job”. Many members voluntarily support community activities, legal and otherwise, such as:

  • Helping not-for-profits with their legal work
  • Volunteering for charities
  • Lobbying on behalf of interest groups
  • Assisting with Community Law Centers

Te Pae Tata Award

The Te Pae Tata Award may be awarded to a person who has been working on a case or project that has advanced Māori interest in the last year. This Award symbolises bringing forth an outcome that may have been or seemed insurmountable at first, but has been achieved.

The Matiu Dickson Award for Te Reo and Tikanga Māori

The Matiu Dickson Award for Te Reo and Tikanga Māori may be awarded to a person or group who has contributed to the promotion and encouragement of the use of Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga in the professional legal fora.

Fine print

  • Any Māori with or studying towards a Law Degree or working within Legal Academia is eligible for the Community Contribution, Te Pae Tata and Matiu Dickson Awards. The John Chadwick award is open to any person who is Māori and in the field of law.
  • Awards will be judged by the Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa Executive (excluding the John Chadwick Award). Members of the judging panel are not eligible for consideration in the individual Award categories (individual categories are the ‘Community Contribution Award’ and the ‘Te Pae Tata Award’).
  • It is intended that these awards will be an annual occurrence and will complement the awards that are currently presented at the Hui-ā-Tau dinner. So as not to limit any future Executives, these awards may be modified by the Executive of the day.
