Te Hunga Rōia Māori’s Law Reform Kōmiti, with assistance from specialist rōpū, prepare submissions on behalf of Te Hunga Rōia Māori and for Te Ao Māori.

Te Hunga Rōia Māori’s submissions and comments can be accessed via the links below.

How is the Law Reform Kōmiti structured?

This structure offers a way for specialist groups to be created and chaired by a lead convenor. The convenors of each group join, with the co-presidents and 2 exec members, to form the Law Reform Kōmiti. This Kōmiti meets quarterly (or when needed to make decisions on submissions).

Specialist rōpū

A practice group that is made up of specialists in that field and anyone who has a keen interest in that area of work. The confirmed specialist rōpū and convenors for 2019 are:

Specialist rōpū Convenor
Criminal Law / Youth Law Kingi Snelgar
Family Law Mānia Hope
Intellectual Property Toni Love and Lynell Tuffery Huria
Whenua Māori/ Treaty/ Natural Resources Tavake Afeaki

These core groups will be the research team and drafters of the submissions. The research and submissions produced from the specialist rōpū will be taken to the Law Reform Kōmiti (via the specialist rōpū convenor) for approval and submissions.

To join a specialist rōpū or to be placed on our peer reviewer list, please contact us at Secretary@maorilawsociety.org.nz

Law Reform Komiti

All convenors of the specialist rōpū and 4 Te Hunga Rōia Māori executive members (including the two Tumuaki) make up the Law Reform Kōmiti. This kōmiti will identify key issues that need to be addressed by specialist rōpū and provide a forum to discuss the submission and to approve the final document to be submitted. It is expected that either the convenor or the Tumuaki of THRMOA will be prepared to talk to the submission if needed.

THRMoA Executive

Although not directly involved in the submissions process, the executive could provide additional support to the Law Reform Kōmiti by identifying additional key issues to be addressed, providing a peer review of the submissions or any other assistance that the Law Reform Kōmiti may need.
